Title: The Graphics
Post by: simlink ♔ on August 16, 2012, 11:51:56 pm
By now we've all seen the pictures of SC2013. It's style can be decribed as cartoony/over saturated. What is your opinion on the graphics and how would you describe them?

Personally I seem them as something in between SC3000 and SC4, but definitely leaning to the former. It looks sort of like a 3D version of SC3000. The textures right now I find to be too clean and bland, and waaay to bright/saturated.

And with the beta now starting soon - I'm loosing hope they'll change. :/

With the beta out now it WON'T change.
I can see that this is an overall feel and style for the game that maxis is aiming for. None the less, it's one that I simply dislike.

It's too bad the game is looking (and sounding so bad.) The graphics are meh, the whole issue of city-tile size, no regional play per se (in its current form like SC4) and the rumoured no control over neighbour connections, and no terraforming.

What makes it worse, though, is that the simulation engine sounds awesome and powerful.

Well I'll buy it if I like the beta.. you never know.. it could be pretty good in the long run.
I'll play the beta first though and see what happens there.

That's why I considered doing the beta. To see if I want to buy it... plus provide feedback and hope they at lease *cosider* it. (i.e. changing the city tile sizes) Before I buy it, I will probably look for reviews from community members. They are the ones who will provide the most honest reviews, IMO.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they push the release date back, to be honest. The Sims 3 was scheduled to come out in mid-February. Just weeks before it was supposed to come out, they pushed it back to June. They said it was for "marketing purposes" - they felt they hadn't advertised it enough. Sounds like EA, for sure. :P

That's typical EA.
Never have been in touch with their shrinking fan base at all.
EA is too big to fail but once they find their fan base has been reduced to tiny sizes they'll likely replace most of their staff and reform the company once they've realized their mistakes (or so I hope :P)

It certainly is. They're games have been declining in quality - several expansions for The Sims 3 have been awful. There have been a few bright spots, but are overall just meh. Much like SC2013 - there are some bright spots. The engine behind the game is really cool. But the graphics suck.

We'll see if EA can turn itself around. It may have no choice...

The quality of its games isn't the only things that's declined, it's their company practices in general with most people seem to absolutely hate. Like the whole thing about banning a person from the forums AND origin for breaking the forum rules. Which is retarded but whatever.

I'd heard about that... that really is stupid. Many of their games are patched through Origin. So does that mean you get stuck with a buggy game? Maybe they should rethink that one...

Origin itself is a piece of crap. It's also snoopware from what I've read.
And to add insult to this disappointment of a game, the DRM that it already has and that they're trying to cover up with this whole global trading thing.

There's no co-op from what I've heard so the only way a person can acctually grief in this is to use a new or failing economy to get way ahead and essentially create a monopoly or a mass corporation of some kind depending on your point of view.

Yeah, origin is oh so wonderful. Now, back to the graphics for a second. :P I watched another video on the SimCity website. It honestly looks like a modern-day version of SC3000. Particularly one building reminded me sooooo much of a office building from that game. It really is sort of looking like a 3D version of SimCity 3000, IMO.

I can understand why some people would like that and I know what they're intentions are with the graphics but they downright suck, as i've said about nine times :P

Sometimes things just need to be said... and said... and said... :P

I would have to agree, I am not a big fan of the graphics.

After playing SC3000 a lot over the past few days, must say that SC2013 definitely looks inspired by SC3K. But considering when SC3K came out, I would say its graphics are miles ahead.

This really is becoming a big sticking point to me... a game should be fun but it should also look nice.

I agree, maybe since this is their first game with the new glass box, that this is the sck3 of it, and there will be a SC4 one if you know what I mean, better graphics, more options ect.

I hope so, Frex. Because GlassBox sounds like an amazing, powerful engine for a city-sim. It's what they've put on top of that engine that is bugging me. The graphics are just way too bland...

Sim City 2013 could be so good but EA stuffed it so bad. With such a powerful engine they could do such a good Sim City 4 remake but they are rebooting a series they didn't need to reboot. They just needed to make Sim City 4.5 or some expansion pack. Or even make a new game just n upgraded SC4. Poor poor EA.....

I totally agree durf, they are wanting more money over quality with it, the graphics show it all :P

Yea, for sure. I wish they would have tried something a little more realistic... then it would have been fabulous. The simulation is great, so it is unfortunate.

But recent images seems to have improved the "baldness" of each city.

One thing that they have done well is the looks of the cartoony graphics. I won't be buying it but for those graphics they have done a good job.

There are certain games where I can definitely live with "cartoony" graphics (take Minecraft for example) but SC just isn't that kind of game, IMO.

One of the most recent images had a park that looked identical, or close to, the sports field from SC3000. So I am thinking perhaps that's where the inspiration for the graphics came from. I'll repost the picture if I find it...
